Anatomy of a collar - apparel terms defined

 

When you are purchasing apparel – promotional or otherwise – it is important to be able to accurately describe what it is you are looking for. Lets start by establishing the basic anatomy of a one-piece high stand collar as illustrated above:

Roll

The fold of the collar down onto itself.

Stand

The stand of a collar indicates how far above the base of the neck the collar folds. In high stand collars the major portion of the collar “stands” above the base of the neck. Also described as the area between the neckline seam and the roll line. It is generally at its greatest height at the center back of the garment.

Roll-line

The line along which the roll of the collar rests. The line that is formed by the natural roll or turn of the collar, or collar and lapels, when the garment front is in correct position on the body.

Gorge-line

The short seam that joins the collar and lapels on a garment

Notch

The space between the lapel and collar.

Break-line

The line where the collar folds

Fall or Collar

The swath of fabric that wraps around the neck – the area between the roll line and the edge of the collar. It is on the outside of the garment away from the body.

Lapel or Reverse

The forward facing, shaped portion of fabric on neckline that joins the collar.

What’s in a a name?

Swag, tchotchkes, gewgaws, knickknacks, baubles, lagniappes, trinkets, kitsch, promos, brand wear, branded items, ad specialities, logoed stuff, crap, perk, giveaway, gift, imprintable, present, throw-in, tradeshow toy, or promotional product.

Lots of different names for an item you put your logo on to make an impression and build your brand. An effective marketing tool. A promotional powerhouse that can deliver more bang for your buck than any other promotional medium.

So, what do you call them?

What does SWAG mean to you?

SWAG is an acronym that is often used in the promotional products industry as an all encompassing term for the “Stuff We All Get.” An all inclusive term the various items companies purchase imprinted with their logo for the purpose of giving away to customers, clients, prospects and employees.

SWAG - Stuff We All GetI recently realized the danger of using the slang term outside of the industry when a new referral and I were discussing promos, and I asked what kind of SWAG they were purchasing, and what has been most effective for them in the past. I received a very puzzled expression in return. Further discussion revealed that in their industry that same acronym was commonly used to mean “Stupid Wild @$$ Guess.” In that context the conversation within their industry would go something like this:

Engineering department calls up purchasing department and wants the components to make 100 new widgets, they would ask: “What’s your swag on the cost of that?” meaning “without doing all the research in sourcing and quoting this project, what is your stupid wild @$$ guess on how much of my budget this purchase is going to consume?”

My first thought was that this was a random company culture issue, and a single company had seredipitously generated the same acroynym, and then it happened again in a completely different vertical market. Once again their definition of swag was “stupid wild @$$ guess.” In this context a project manager calls up a sub contracting company to come in and clean up an environmental impact site and the conversation looks like this: “We need a crew of X guys in here ASAP to excavate and reclaim contaminated soil and replace with clean fill. What’s your swag on the that?” meaning “without doing all the research in sourcing and quoting this project, what is your stupid wild @$$ guess on how much it is going to cost to get this fixed immediately.”
